SunGard’s AddVantage Is Re-architected and Exceeds Previous Benchmark.

SunGard Asset Management Systems (AMS) recently completed a scalability benchmark test of its re-architected AddVantage. AddVantage is SunGard’s browser-based, real-time wealth management and trust accounting solution. The benchmark tested a new multi-tier version of the solution. According to Niraj Gilja, president of SunGard’s AddVantage, “The excellent scalability of the new architecture will allow us to confidently satisfy large and demanding financial institutions.”

AddVantage runs on Windows 2003 Enterprise .NET platform on any Intel-based hardware platform. In the recent benchmark test, AddVantage ran on a single database server (an HP Proliant DL760 G2 server configured with 4 CPUs running at 2.8GHz), containing records of 400,000 accounts. Four application servers – each also a 4 CPU DL760 G2 server– simulated a typical processing load of real-time transactions, online reports, trade inputs, and trade settlements. “Our goal for the benchmark was to support 2,000 concurrent users with excellent response times,” says Gilja. “We were delighted when AddVantage easily met that goal. The size of this single database is ten times the size of our largest client currently in production.”

SunGard’s AddVantage utilizes CACHÉ, high performance database technology from InterSystems Corporation. CACHÉ is a post-relational database and rapid development environment offering ultra-fast and massively scalable objects and SQL. It has a unique caching capability (ECP, which stands for Enterprise Cache Protocol) that enhances the performance and scalability of multi-tier applications. AddVantage uses ECP to distribute the workload among multiple application servers. This offloads the database server and allows large workloads to be handled by groups of inexpensively priced machines.

"We’ve built resiliency into the system, using ECP."

“The results demonstrate that ECP easily enables‘scaling out’ of applications,” says Robert Nagle, Vice President of Software Development for InterSystems.“Even at 2,000 users, the load on the database server was modest. We could have added application servers to incrementally support additional users. This test is an excellent demonstration of Caché’s high performance and the scalability afforded by our ECP technology.”

The ability to add application servers is important, Gilja explains, for a variety of reasons: “We’ve built resiliency into the system, using ECP. If one server goes down, the others seamlessly take up the slack. Plus, application servers are relatively inexpensive. SunGard’s clients will be able to expand their AddVantage solutions at moderate, incremental costs.”
